About the author

Russell Ash is best known as the author of the annual Top 10 of Everything and other popular reference books. He has also compiled numerous humour books, including The Cynic’s Dictionary, Howlers and The Uncensored Boy’s Own, and is the co-author of Fish Who Answer the Telephone and Other Bizarre Books.

His interest in unusual names derives partly from his researches into his own family tree. He is pleased to have narrowly escaped from a family tradition that gave rise to such names as Claudius Ash (the inventor of false teeth) and Serjeant (his name, not his rank) Ash - although he did marry into a family that rejoices in Cobbledicks among its Cornish ancestry.
